Mission and Purpose

Community Action for Better Housing (CABH) provides safe, comfortable, and affordable housing and related facilities and advancement resources to families and individuals who are lower income, homeless, disabled, or elderly.

Our Mission

At Community Action for Better Housing (CABH), we are committed to building a legacy rooted in integrity, compassion, and visionary leadership. As a ministry of the Diocese of Fall River, we work in faithful partnership with the Church and the communities it serves to provide safe, sound, and affordable housing for those most in need—including very low-income families, individuals experiencing homelessness, people with special needs, veterans, and the elderly.

Anchored in the gateway cities of New Bedford and Fall River, our mission is to steward resources responsibly, lead with transparency, and honor the dignity of every person we serve. Through respectful service and strategic collaboration with both public and private partners, we advance the Church’s mission while fostering stronger, more inclusive neighborhoods.

CABH strives to ensure that its properties are well-maintained, dignified spaces that reflect care for tenants and pride in its mission. This includes keeping buildings clean, secure, and free from operational defects. The organization also offers programs that are responsive to tenant needs and maintain properties in a way that enhances the reputation of the Diocese and contributes positively to surrounding neighborhoods.

Regulatory Compliance and Excellence

CABH is dedicated to meeting or exceeding all compliance requirements set by regulatory agencies. When compliance issues arise, CABH responds promptly and thoroughly.

CABH seeks to advance the mission of the Church and serve as a trusted partner to the Diocese and its ministries. It promotes its Catholic identity and ensures alignment with Church teachings, while avoiding partnerships that conflict with Church doctrine. Strengthening relationships with local government and community offices is also a key objective.

CABH upholds the highest standards of financial accountability and integrity. The organization ensures clean, unmodified annual audits for itself and its affiliated entities, including St. Dominic’s, Oscar Romero, and Assisi Housing. It maintains best practices in financial reporting and robust internal controls for both finance and IT systems.

Competent, Mission-Driven Staffing

CABH is focused on recruiting, retaining, and developing a team that is both aligned with its mission and professionally equipped. Programs are staffed adequately to manage tenant relations and compliance, and maintenance staffing levelsare matched to property needs.

CABH adheres to the best practices in nonprofit governance and board leadership. Policies are regularly reviewed to ensure alignment with CABH’s bylaws, supporting effective governance and organizational oversight.
